Five-Year Survival 60 to 80 percent, depending on the site
Stage II
Standard Treatment If radiation is used, the technique is individualized by a radiation oncologist experienced in treatment of tumors of this area. Radiation implants may be needed. Surgery is an alternative, and the same considerations apply as for Stage I about when surgery or radiotherapy are preferred. The same choice of hyperfractionated radiotherapy applies.
Five-Year Survival 50 percent when the tumor is in the tonsil or back of the tongue
Stage III
Standard Treatment The preferred treatment usually combines surgery with postoperative radiotherapy. There are new surgical techniques for removal of the tumor and reconstruction. Radiation implants and hyperfractionation techniques are becoming more useful.
Five-Year Survival 20 percent (back of the tongue) to 30 percent (tonsil)
